General information only, not medical advice.
Not every knee problem comes from sport. Warehouse shifts, construction, retail, nursing, delivery driving and trades all ask a lot of the knees: standing for hours, climbing, squatting, kneeling and lifting.
What makes some jobs hard on knees
- Hours of standing or walking on hard floors
- Repeated squatting and kneeling
- Climbing ladders and stairs
- Lifting and carrying, especially while twisting
Habits worth building
- Vary your posture. Shift weight, step, sit when you can, and avoid locking your knees for long periods.
- Kneel smart. Use a pad, and alternate between kneeling, crouching and standing.
- Lift with your legs and avoid twisting with a loaded knee.
- Wear supportive shoes and replace them when worn.
- Stretch and move on breaks. Try a few easy steps from our warm-up guide.
- Build leg and hip strength outside work.
Warning signs
- Swelling, warmth or redness
- Pain that keeps getting worse or wakes you at night
- Locking, catching or giving way

Can a knee sleeve help at work?
Banner Health notes that people in physically demanding jobs may want a sleeve, and also says sleeves are not designed to be worn all day. Talk to your doctor first, especially if you have a wound or are recovering from surgery. Learn the differences in knee sleeve vs knee brace.
