Knee Pain From Cycling: Bike Fit Mistakes and Quick Fixes

General information only, not medical advice. For persistent pain, see a doctor and consider a professional bike fit.

Cycling is easy on impact, but your knees turn the pedals thousands of times per ride. Small setup problems can add up. Where the pain shows up often hints at the cause.

Match the pain to the likely bike-fit issue

Where it hurts Common bike-fit or riding causes to check
Front of the knee Saddle too low or too far forward, pushing big gears, short crank length for your leg
Back of the knee Saddle too high or too far back, overextending at the bottom of the stroke
Inside of the knee Cleat position, foot angle or stance width that twists the knee
Outside of the knee Cleat or saddle position, overuse of the IT band; see IT band syndrome

These are common rules of thumb, not a diagnosis. A bike fitter can check your actual position.

Other things that cause trouble

  • Sudden jumps in ride length or climbing
  • Grinding up hills in too hard a gear instead of spinning
  • Worn cleats or shoes
  • Tight hamstrings, quads or hips

Quick things to try

  1. Change one thing at a time (a few millimeters on saddle height) so you know what helped.
  2. Spin an easier gear on climbs.
  3. Build mileage gradually.
  4. Warm up on easy gears; see our knee warm-up guide.

When to see a doctor

If pain continues, worsens, or comes with swelling, redness, locking or instability, get checked. See our knee pain location chart.

Using a knee sleeve for cycling

Cyclists often like a sleeve for warmth on cool mornings and a secure feel. Choose a breathable one that does not bunch behind the knee while pedaling. Banner Health notes cycling can be a lower-strain way to stay active compared with running or other high-impact activities.
